New chiefs appointed to police and fire service

The Government Council for National Security (KYSEA) on Tuesday decided to appoint new police and fire chiefs, in a bid to address mounting public concerns about law and order.

Following the council's decisions, Dimitris Mallios, until now head of the Alien and Border Protection Branch, will replace Lazaros Mavropoulos as chief of the Hellenic Police (ELAS).

Dozens arrested over anniversary street riots

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) announced on Thursday that 193 people were detained, of whom 30 were arrested, in connection with street riots that erupted in Athens and Thessaloniki on Wednesday night after marches and rallies commemorating the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos in 2008 by a police special guard. 

Amygdaleza detention camp evacuated due to nearby wildfire

As a precautionary measure due to the wildfire spreading in the vicinity, authorities are conducting an evacuation of the Amygdaleza migrant detention camp situated in western Athens. According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the center currently accommodates 700 individuals who will be moved to alternate facilities.

Authorities apprehend suspect connected to migrant confinement video

The Greek authorities have apprehended an individual in connection with a disturbing video posted on social media on Tuesday. The video depicted a man confining a group of 13 undocumented migrants within a cargo trailer, which was being towed by a 4WD vehicle, near the town of Alexandroupoli in northern Greece.
