A crucial decision for Hellenism in the US

The next couple of days will be crucial for the future of Hellenism in the United States. A decision will be taken in Istanbul on whether Archbishop Demetrios of America will step down from his post and, if so, who will replace him. Officials in Athens would in the past treat this as a routine decision. But this is no longer the case.

Archbishop Demetrios of America will reportedly attend on September 9 an event to honor the Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack, when the south tower of the World Trade Center came crashing down upon it.

Diocese of Glydfada prays for postponement of Pope’s visit to Greece

The Greek Orthodox Diocese of Glyfada issued a statement saying it would pray for the scheduled visit of Pope Francis to Greece on April 16 to be postponed, as it considered the visit of ‘such grave significance’ that it should be decided upon by the whole body of the Greek Orthodox Church and not solely to the Archbishop of Athens and Greece, Hieronymus.
