Miltiadis Tentoglou wins gold in men’s long jump

Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou won the gold medal in the men's long jump final at the 2024 Summer Olympics, in Saint-Denis, with a jump of 8.48 meters on Tuesday.

Jamaican Wayne Pinnock took silver, and Italy's Mattia Furlani claimed bronze.

Speaking to the ERT public broadcaster after the event, Tentoglou said, "I am very happy, but I feel I could have achieved even more."

A family in Perivoli, Grevena, received an unexpected visitor.

According to trikalavoice.gr, while the family was outside enjoying their coffee, they were surprised to find a bear strolling around and eating in their yard.

After a short time, the bear finished its walk and left the area.

Supreme Court takes action against animal cruelty

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the head of the Athens prosecutor's office to investigate the case of a dog that appears to have been beaten to death with a metal rod in West Attica.

The case in Megara is the latest in a recent spate of particularly horrendous abuse cases against companion and working animals, a trend that has landed Greece on blacklists among European nations.

Farmer protests spread to northern Greece

Farmers in the northern prefectures of Kozani, Kastoria, and Grevena, have staged protests and drove tractors in convoys towards towns to highlight problems in their sector that they say "threaten the sustainability of agricultural and livestock production."

Issues related to the implementation of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are at the center of the farmers' concerns.

Ano Liosia residents urged to evacuate

Residents in Gennimata and Kanala in Ano Liosia, in the northwestern part of the Athens agglomeration, have been urged to evacuate to Liosia due to wildfires in the area, in a 112 alert.

In nearby Fyli, the flames have already consumed some buildings.

Authorities have also ordered that the capital's main landfill at Fyli be closed until further notice.

Fire breaks out in Grevena

The Hellenic Fire Service has responded to a fire near the town of Grevena in northern Greece on Wednesday. According to state broadcaster ERT, the blaze broke out in a wooded area near Kogiadika. There is no reported risk to nearby homes.

There are currently 65 firefighters, 14 vehicles, four helicopters and two aircraft on scene.
