Egyptians began voting on March 26 in a presidential election set to deliver an easy win for incumbent Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, with turnout the main focus after all serious opposition withdrew complaining of repression.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said June 3 it had summoned the Turkish chargé d’affaires in Cairo to protest remarks made by Turkish officials regarding last week’s presidential polls.

Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, former Egyptian military chief, is now poised to win the presidential elections held this week with an overwhelming majority.

Provisional results quoted by state media suggest he received over 96% of the vote, with 24.7 million ballots counted.
