John Kerry made a surprise trip to Somalia on May 5, officials said, becoming the first US secretary of state to visit the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation.

A Somalia-born man living in the U.S. traveled to Syria and trained alongside terrorists, then returned with plans to attack a military base or a prison, according to a federal indictment announced on April 16.

Between four and 20 people have been killed and many injured in a suicide bombing of a hotel in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, international news outlets reported on Friday.
