Azerbaijan ruling party wins polls

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev's party has won snap parliamentary elections, the poll commission announced Monday.

Aliyev had called Sunday's snap legislative election ahead of schedule to avoid the poll coinciding with the COP29 climate conference that Baku is to host on November 11-22.

Azerbaijan leader to run for re-election in 2024: party

Azerbaijan's ruling party on Friday nominated incumbent President Ilham Aliyev for re-election next year, a move expected to extend the decades-long rule of the Aliyev family.

The 61-year-old has governed the energy-rich country since 2003, when he succeeded his father, Heydar, a former KGB officer and Communist-era boss.

Turkey, Azerbaijan show solidarity in fighting COVID-19

Turkey and Azerbaijan displayed digital versions of their flags late on April 13 on Ata Tower, one of the landmarks in the Turkish capital, to highlight their solidarity in combating the novel coronavirus.

The tower also displayed the two countries' motto "one nation, two states."

Turkey's move came after a similar gesture by Azerbaijan.

Ankara hails Baku's show of unity against virus

Turkey on April 11 hailed a gesture by neighboring Azerbaijan in the capital Baku honoring the countries' cooperation against coronavirus.

"As part of the mutual fight against COVID-19, Turkish and Azerbaijani flags are flying together on Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, one of Baku's symbols," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu said on Twitter.

Azerbaijan slams delay in Turkey’s EU membership

Keeping "brotherly" Turkey waiting for European Union membership is a "big injustice," Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Dec. 23.

"Many years have passed since Turkey signed the agreement with the EU. But did the next steps produce any results? Of course not. This is a big injustice," said Aliyev, speaking on national television.
