G7 foreign ministers on April 10 began two days of talks in Hiroshima, with John Kerry's visit to the atom-bombed city -- the first-ever by a US secretary of state -- overshadowing the broader agenda.

Japan on August 9 marked the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki that claimed more than 74,000 lives almost instantly, in one of the final chapters of World War II.

The 70th anniversary of the first atomic bomb dropped by a U.S. aircraft on Hiroshima, Japan, was commemorated on August 6. Thoussands of lanterns were released on Hiroshima’s Motoyasu river after a ceremony, attended by Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, was held at Hiroshima’s memorial park.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Hiroshima on August 6 to mark 70 years since the atomic bombing that helped end World War II but still divides opinion today over whether the total destruction it caused was justified.

Secretary of State John Kerry said on August 6 the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima underscored the importance of the Iran nuclear deal and disarmament in general, as Japan marked the attack's 70th anniversary.
