Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik will become king on Sunday after the unprecedented abdication of his mother Queen Margrethe, with more than 100,000 Danes expected to pour into Copenhagen's streets for the historic event.

The 55-year-old future monarch is hugely popular in Denmark, with 82 percent of Danes saying in a recent poll they think he will make a good king.

Denmark's Prince Henrik, husband of Queen Margrethe, died on Tuesday night at Fredensborg Castle, the Royal House said in a statement, quoted by Reuters. 

He was 83, and had been diagnosed with a benign tumor two weeks ago.

"His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died peacefully in his sleep ...," the statement said. "Her Majesty the Queen and the two sons were at his side."

Being the king of metal drummers was not enough for Lars Ulrich. So, the Danish-born Metallica drummer went and got a higher title on Monday (June 12) when he was officially dubbed a knight by the Danish crown prince. His bandmates congratulated Ulrich on the honor bestowed on him by Crown Prince Frederik, saying it was “not bad for a snot-nosed kid from Gentofte!”
