Turkey to conduct first ‘Climate Council’ in January: Minister

Within the scope of the decisions to be taken in the country's very first "Climate Council" slated for January, the government will draw its own roadmap to fight against the effects of climate change, Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum has said.

Air pollution blamed for 45,000 premature deaths in 2018

Air pollution caused a total of 44,617 premature deaths in 2018 in Turkey, recent research has shown.

Most fatalities due to prolonged exposure to the airborne PM2.5, known as particulate matter, occurred in the provinces of Iğdır, Kahramanmaraş, Mersin, Manisa, Niğde and Burdur, said Professor Kayıhan Pala from the Uludağ University's Medical School who led the study.

The procurement of single-use plastics will end in the public sector as of February 1, 2021, Natural Environment and Waters Secretary General Constantine Aravossis said on Wednesday, in a memo to all state agencies.

The regulation voted by Parliament in October calls for an end to the procurement of 10 specific types of single-use plastics, in line with EU directives.
