Repeated bombings have crippled bridges, hospitals and factories. Many doctors and civil servants have gone unpaid for more than a year. Malnutrition and poor sanitation have made the Middle Eastern country vulnerable to diseases that most of the world has confined to the history books.

Third of Yemen fighters are children: UNICEF

Children make up a third of fighters in the armed groups in conflict-wracked Yemen, a UN official said April 9, also warning that malnutrition levels in the country were set to explode.
      
"We are seeing children in battle, at check-points and unfortunately among (those) killed and injured," Julien Harneis, UNICEF's representative in Yemen, told AFP during a stop in Geneva.

US expedites arms shipments to Saudi-led coalition

The United States has stepped up weapons deliveries in support of a Saudi-led coalition resisting the advance of Shiite rebels in Yemen, a senior US official said April 7.
      
"Saudi Arabia is sending a strong message to the Huthis and their allies that they cannot overrun Yemen by force," Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in the Saudi capital.
