The United States and South Korea agreed on the early deployment of a controversial US missile defence system in the region, the South's acting president said Monday after talks with visiting US Vice President Mike Pence, AFP reported.

North Korea said March 2 it is ready to be "merciless" in the face of joint South Korean-United States military drills that began a day earlier. 

The weeks-long annual military exercises in the South have also previously provoked Pyongyang, which views them as a preparation for invasion. 

The daughter of Choi Soon-Sil, the woman at the center of a corruption scandal that led to the impeachment of South Korea's President, has been arrested in Denmark after months in hiding, Seoul prosecutors said Dec. 2.

BELGRADE - South Korean lawmakers on Friday voted overwhelmingly to impeach President Park Geun-hye over an influence-peddling scandal, setting the stage for her to become the country's first elected leader to be pushed from office in disgrace.

South Korean President Park Geun-Hye replaced her prime minister and finance minister Nov. 2, as she scrambled to contain a damaging scandal over a close friend accused of meddling in state affairs.

The top-level reshuffle, which also saw a new public safety minister, was the latest attempt to appease growing public anger with the president and her administration.

South Korean President Park Geun-Hye on May 21 selected her justice minister to become the new prime minister -- a post that has become something of a poisoned chalice under her administration.
