Ikaria

A 52-year-old crew member of the Nissos Myconos ferry sustained serious leg injuries when the ship's rope broke during the process of the vessel's departure from Ikaria island, in the eastern Aegean, late on Thursday.

At the time of the accident there were particularly strong winds at the Ikaria port of Aghios Kirykos. The seaman was on board when he got injured.

ABC News went to the Greek island of Ikaria for a special report. For those that don’t know it, Ikaria is a place where the word ‘longevity’ takes a whole new meaning, as it is a place where people effortlessly live to the age of 90 and beyond!

The small Fourni archipelago is just 17 square miles large but is hailed as the ancient shipwreck capital of the world thanks to the discovery of 22 shipwrecks in the area. Underwater archeologists are excited by the secrets hidden around the collection of 13 isllands and islets between the eastern Aegean Islands of Samos and Ikaria.

In an attempt to explain why many people on the Greek island of Ikaria live past 100, CNN explores the way of living in the isle and reveals that the secret of their longevity is “eating right”.
