Inauguration of Mauricio Macri

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The United Nations' Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has asked the government of Argentine President Mauricio Macri to "immediately" release Milagro Sala, a social activist and an MP in the Parlasur, following her "arbitrary and baseless" arrest in January of this year.

Argentina, in a stinging repudiation of outgoing leftist President Cristina Kirchner, elected a pro-market government president to take the helm of Latin America's third-biggest economy.
 

Conservative opposition candidate Mauricio Macri stunned Argentina's ruling party with an unexpectedly strong showing in the presidential election on Oct. 25, forcing a run-off vote next month, preliminary results showed.
