At least 10 Egyptian soldiers were killed and several injured when two suicide car bombers hit army checkpoints in northern Sinai on July 7, security sources said.

The two cars exploded as they passed through two checkpoints close to each other on a road outside the border city of Rafah, the sources said. No group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Egypt said on Dec. 14 that it still has no evidence to back up Moscow's analysis that a "terrorist" attack had downed a Russian passenger plane at the end of October in the Sinai Peninsula.

The jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) said it smuggled a bomb on board that blew up the Russian jet on Oct. 31, killing all 224 people on board.

A militant group affiliated to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Egypt claimed responsibility for the downing of a Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula on Oct. 31, the group said in a statement circulated by supporters on Twitter.

Wreckage of the Russian airplane, which crashed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Saturday, has reportedly been found near the al-Arish airport.

According to Egyptian officials, most of the 224 people on board are likely to have died, the BBC reports.

Unidentified assailants gunned down an Egyptian police general on the street in the Sinai Peninsula stronghold of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) late on Sept.19, the interior ministry said.

Egypt's army said on Sept.8 it had launched a "major military operation" against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the Sinai Peninsula, killing 29 jihadists and leaving two soldiers dead.

Egypt's affiliate of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) threatened on August 5 to execute a Croatian kidnapped in Cairo last month within 48 hours if Muslim women jailed in Egypt are not freed.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's (ISIL) Egypt affiliate said in a statement on a social media site it carried out an attack in North Sinai on military checkpoints that killed five members of the country's security forces on July 18.

The deaths occurred when several mortar rounds hit two checkpoints, security sources said earlier. 

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants launched a wide-scale coordinated assault on several military checkpoints in Egypt's North Sinai on July 1 in which 50 people were killed, security sources said, the largest attack yet in the insurgency-hit province. 

Sinai Province, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's (ISIL) Egypt affiliate, fired rockets on June 9 at the direction of an airport in Sinai used by multinational peacekeeping forces, security sources said, adding that there were no casualties reported. 

The group claimed responsibility for the attack on several Twitter accounts linked to it.
