Issues and developments during the Turkish general elections

The referendum on April 16 will mark another turning point or, rather, crossroads in Turkey's political history.

Both the "yes" and "no" camps have visibly geared up their campaigns with harsh rhetoric and reciprocal accusations with just three days until one of Turkey's most important referendums ever. 

The idea of a non-democratic Turkey will be clinched if yes votes emerge in the April 16 referendum on constitutional amendments, main opposition CHP leader said on April 12, commenting on the relationship with EU.

"We want to be a part of the civilized world," CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said in an interview with Doğan TV Ankara representative Hakan Çelik on CNN Türk.

Turkey's Culture Ministry has prepared designs for a major new museum outside Ankara to remember the defeat of the failed July 15 coup that attempted to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on April 9.

Europe is no longer the center of democracy and human rights but it is one of Nazism and oppression, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, accusing European leaders of being surrounded by far-right politicians. 

The leaders of the "yes" camp in the referendum campaign to shift Turkey to an executive presidential system cannot successfully defend their position, so prefer to attack the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and its leader, CHP head Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has said.

Turkey's EU minister on Mach 25 criticized a U.K. parliamentary committee report, saying some of its conclusions on the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey were partial.

Assessments in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) reveal that there is no change in up to 9 percent of the undecided parts of the party.  

There is still some time until the referendum but the polarization in Turkey indicates that whatever the outcome is, there will not be a large difference between the two segments. 

Europe's "masquerade ball' is over, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has told the continent following his most recent spat with domestic and foreign enemies, slamming countries such as Germany and the Netherlands for banning Turkish ministers from conducting constitutional amendment campaigns.

A common policy should be developed against increasing racism in Europe, immigrant hostility, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic politics, Turkey's EU Minister Ömer Çelik said March 6 on his official Twitter account.
