A suspect in the 2017 attack on a nightclub in Istanbul that left 39 people dead has been detained in Kyrgyzstan, security services in the Central Asian country said on Dec. 10.

The accused gunman in a 2017 nightclub attack in Istanbul which killed 39 people could face 40 aggravated life sentences.

A court in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul on Jan. 27 indicted Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbek national, on charges of murder and being a member of an armed terrorist group, according to judicial sources.

Turkish police on Dec. 30 detained 102 people with suspected links to ISIL in the countdown to New Year's Eve, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

An Istanbul court has ordered the release of 19 suspects pending trial and ruled for the continuation of arrest of 20 other suspects in a case on the New Year's Eve Reina nightclub attack in 2017.

An Istanbul court on July 18 ruled for the continuation of the detention of 44 suspects in a case of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attack on the Reina nightclub in Istanbul's Ortaköy district in the early hours of Jan. 1, 2017 that killed 39 people.

Jake Raak, one of the survivors of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attack on Istanbul's Reina nightclub on New Year's Day in 2017, was asked at the March 27 court hearing in the case "whether he was an intelligence agent" or an "employee of the U.S. government."

Victims of an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attack on a nightclub were commemorated on its first anniversary in Istanbul on Dec. 31, 2017, Hurriyet reported. 

Authorities have taken all security precautions for the residents of Istanbul to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin has said, adding that Istanbul police will be deployed to guard specific places too.  

Security measures in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district, including in the central Taksim Square area, have been doubled up in preparation for New Year’s Eve on the first anniversary of the bloody attack on Istanbul’s Reina nightclub.

A Turkish court on Dec. 16 ordered the release of seven suspects in the trial over the deadly New Year attack on an Istanbul nightclub following an initial series of hearings.
