The operation to detain Ovidio Guzman, the son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, unleashed firefights that turned the northern city of Culiacan into a war zone with 30 dead, authorities said on Jan. 6. 

The bodies of at least 50 people were found in a mass grave at a farm outside Guadalajara's western city of Mexico, local authorities said.

The local prosecutor's office reported that 13 of the dead were identified - 12 men and a woman. The remains of the victims were repatriated to their families.

Families of 42 criminal suspects killed in a gunfight with federal forces in western Mexico angrily waited outside a morgue May 24 for their bodies and answers from the authorities.

A gunfight between security forces and an armed group claimed the lives of at least 43 people in the state of Michoacan in southwestern Mexico on Friday.

The shoot-out, which lasted for about three hours and was probably drug-related, took place in Tanhuato near the Jalisco state border.
