A hearse carrying the body of assassinated former prime minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Tokyo on July 9 from the western Japanese city where he was shot at close range on the campaign trail.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was on Friday confirmed dead after he was shot at during a campaign speech in Nara City, western Japan, local media reported citing officials.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, an arch-conservative and one of his nation's most divisive figures, was shot dead during a campaign speech on July 8 in western Japan. He was airlifted to a hospital but officials said he was not breathing and his heart had stopped. Later, Japan's NHK television said Abe has died in the hospital. 

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida declared victory on Nov. 1 after leading his ruling coalition to a strong majority in national elections.

Fumio Kishida was elected Japan's prime minister in a parliamentary vote on Oct. 4 and will be tasked with quickly tackling the pandemic and other domestic and global challenges and leading a national election within weeks.
