Diverging paths: Turkey and Indonesia

Turkey is no Indonesia, Standard & Poor?s declared this week. 

But the two countries have many things in common. Both are composed of Muslim majorities, both are listed under the MINT (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey) grouping, trailing the BRICS. Both countries have received a BB+ rating from S&P recently. 

Indonesia court orders Suharto foundation to return $325 mn

An Indonesian court has ordered a foundation set up by former Indonesian dictator Suharto to pay back about $325 million of embezzled state funds, an official said on August 11. 

The Supreme Court ruled that the huge sum, which came from an educational foundation controlled by the Suharto family, must be returned, said court spokesman Suhadi.    

Indonesia government aims to outlaw insulting president, sparks uproar

Indonesian legislators and human rights activists criticized Aug. 5 a government proposal to make insulting the president illegal, citing concern for freedom of speech in the world's third-largest democracy. 

The proposal aims to revive a law from the era of former authoritarian ruler Suharto that was used to silence dissidents with jail sentences and fines. 

Hong Kong woman jailed for six years for maid abuse

A Hong Kong woman was jailed for six years on Feb. 27 for beating and starving her Indonesian maid and keeping her prisoner, as the judge called for action over laws which leave domestic workers exposed to abuse.
      
But while victim Erwiana Sulistyaningsih said she was happy and "appreciated" the judgement, she felt that six years was not long enough.
