Israeli and Palestinian envoys to the United Nations on Thursday traded heated barbs at a Security Council meeting over the controversial visit by an Israeli minister to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, called the session "pathetic" and "absurd" while the Palestinian envoy accused the Jewish state of acting "with absolute contempt."

Israel's recent evacuation, destruction and confiscation decisions against Palestinians violate international law, according to a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on March 19.

The US ambassador to the UN has warned member states that Donald Trump will take a vote on his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital "personally," and she will report back to him on nay-sayers at the UN General Assembly.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will travel to the U.S. on Dec. 20 to attend the voting on a draft resolution rejecting the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital at the United Nations, private broadcaster CNN Türk has reported.
