Funeral held for ex-Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbaş

A funeral was held on Feb. 14 for Kadir Topbaş, former mayor of the Turkish metropolis Istanbul. He died on Feb. 13 at the age of 76.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also attended the ceremony at the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul.

"We are facing a great calamity. Coronavirus has separated from us many of our companions," Erdoğan said.

Former Istanbul mayor dies at 76

Kadir Topbaş, the former mayor of Istanbul, passed away on Feb. 13 at the age of 76.

He was hospitalized last November after he contracted COVID-19.

Topbaş was elected mayor of Istanbul in 2004 as the candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and maintained his position until 2017 when he resigned.

CHP members file complaint against former, current Istanbul mayors over metro project

Members of the main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) Istanbul Municipality Council have filed a criminal complaint against former Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbaş and current mayor Mevlüt Uysal, claiming that the recent cancelation of subway tenders led to public losses of at least 1 billion Turkish Liras.

No ordinary resignation for Istanbul

Under normal circumstances, in a normal news cycle, the resignation of Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş should have been in the headlines throughout all subsequent days. But it had already become common news in pro-government news outlets on the morning of Sept. 22, and he waited until 7:00 p.m. that evening to announce it.

Istanbul municipal council to elect new mayor on Sept 28 after Topbaş's resignation

The Istanbul municipal council will meet on Sept. 28 to elect a new provincial mayor, after Kadir Topbaş announced last week that he was stepping down from the post, which he had held for the past 13 years. 

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Sept. 25 that the position of Topbaş would "probably" be filled  by one of the Istanbul district mayors.
