Two wildfires ignited by lightning Friday afternoon are burning in Kalyvia Thorikou, eastern Attica.

Firefighters have dispatched 36 personnel, 13 vehicles and one helicopter to control the blazes. Volunteers are assisting. 

A wildfire is currently ongoing in a forested area in the region of Kalyvia Socha, in the Municipality of Sparta, Laconia.

On the scene are 31 firefighters, with two ground teams from the 9th Special Disaster Response Unit (EMODE) and six vehicles, while four firefighting airplanes and one helicopter are conducting water drops.

As Evia is at the mercy of the fire which is moving menacingly towards more and more areas, the smoke that has built up and covered the Attica sky is indicative of the size of the fire.

The fire that broke out just before 2pm on Wednesday (31/7) in central Euboea is running out of control.

Kalyvia, Ilia has been in mourning since Friday afternoon, when the identities of victims of the shocking traffic accident, which occurred on the Pyrgos-Kyparissia highway, at the height of Elaia, were identified.

A senior cleric was seen on Friday afternoon blessing flood victims from a tractor in a small village in central Greece, a region that flooded following two days of unprecedented rainfall. 

Residents of Megan Kalyvia, a village submerged in tons of water, saw Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Trikki on a tractor trailer saluting and blessing the public as he drove by.

Two wildfires, fanned by strong winds, raged uncontrolled through coastal towns near Athens on Monday forcing residents to flee their homes and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of children from a summer camp.

A large-scale operation to evacuate animals from shelters and stables in Southeast Attica after fires spread on Monday is under way, organized by the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals (pets) that called for volunteers on social media.

Villagers were ordered to leave their homes and hundreds of children were evacuated from a summer camp as two separate wildfires fanned by strong winds damaged houses to the southeast and west of Athens on Monday, authorities said.
