A temporary refugee center in Kanjiza, near the border with Hungary in northern Serbia, was shut down on Friday, Tanjug reported.

The decision came as refugees from the Middle East no longer use this route on their way to Germany and Scandinavian countries.

Bulgaria on Tuesday warned its citizens to avoid using the main road linking Serbia's capital Belgrade with Hungary's Budapest after Hungarian authorities closed Roszke border crossing for cars and passengers to stem migrant influx.

A new wave of refugees is expected to reach the refugee reception centre in Presevo in southern Serbia, the Red Cross in Presevo said on Tuesday.

"At the moment, we have about 500 refugees but we have an information that during the day about 2,000 more will arrive," Ahmet Halimi, Secretary of the Red Cross in Presevo, said on Tuesday.
