Thousands of people are expected today in the center of Plovdiv, where it will be the culmination of the opening of the city as the European Capital of Culture. Dozens of events are scheduled for the opening weekend that started last night.

Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria, is getting ready to cement its status on the European city break circuit as one of two European capitals of culture for 2019, according to CNN.  (The other is the rocky city of Matera, Italy.)

Baby boom was reported by maternity wards at major hospitals in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv for 2018. A light installation connected to the maternity wards has been placed in Kapana art district in the city and every time a child is born, the lamps go off. Just for a month, the lamps in the art district lit up over 400 times to announce the start of new life, reports BNT.

From 1 to 3 June, artists and innovators from all spheres of cultural life are gathering to change the appearance of the quarter of Kapana in Plovdiv.

Plovdiv and Matera are amongst the candidates for the European Prize for Urban Public Space 2018. 

The sixth edition of Kapana Fest will enchant Plovdiv streets in September! The event begins on September 29 and within three days it will turn the authentic Plovdiv quarter into an independent territory of culture, art and entertainment.
