The remote eastern island of Kastellorizo in the Dodecanese on Friday celebrated the 81st anniversary of its liberation with the attendance of Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.

During his visit, Dendias emphasized the island's significant geopolitical importance and its crucial role in Greece's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Continental Shelf. 

"In Turkey we say, 'Tencere yuvarlanmis kapagini bulmus.' Don't you have the same proverb?" a woman from Kusadasi on Turkey's western Aegean coast, eating at the table next to ours on the island of Agathonisi asked the waiter, making a circle with her hand. "I bet she means 'Birds of a feather flock together,'" the Greek owner of the restaurant tells us.

He was right.

Under the surveillance of units from both the Greek and Turkish Navies, the Italian ship “Teliri” is laying fiber optic cables within the potential Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.

The Dodecanese appeals court has sentenced a man who worked for a Turkish consulate to five years in prison on spying charges, legal sources said on Friday.

The man, a Greek national employed with the Turkish consulate on the island of Rhodes, was arrested in 2020.

Kastellorizo has an extraordinary history of prosperity and destruction

A lot has changed in terms of Greece's defense doctrine since 1996, when its naval forces and Turkey's had gathered around the two islets of Imia in the eastern Aegean.

Some 350 athletes from 16 countries will strike out in the 16th Kastellorizo-Kaş Open Water Swim Event, also known as "one race in two countries."

The seven-kilometer race will start on June 26 at 9 a.m. from Kastellorizo and end in the southern province of Antalya's Kaş district.
