EU Parliament fails to skewer doner kebab meat phosphates
The European Parliament on Dec. 13 narrowly failed to block a proposal to allow the use of phosphates in doner kebab meat, an additive which critics say is linked to heart disease.
The MEPs Saved the Döner Kebabs
The European Commission proposal for phosphate additive in the doners was adopted, the EP press service announced.
On Tuesday, the draft report against the use of phosphate supplements in the meat for the doner meat was not adopted with the necessary absolute majority of 376 MEPs, although it received the approval of MEPs in the health commission.

The European Parliament Reassured: We will not Forbid Döner Kebabs
The European Parliament may veto the European Commission's legislative proposal to allow the use of phosphate additives in frozen meat (including Döners) because of health concerns. Serious concerns about the health effects of phosphates used as food supplements were expressed by members of the EP's Public Health and Food Safety Committee, reports actualno.

The doner kebab, one of the most popular and affordable fast food dishes in Europe, might soon be banned, German media reported.
The issue has been raised following the European Commission's proposal to allow the use of phosphates in lamb, beef and veal sold in supermarkets.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel cut and ate the iconic Turkish döner kebab at an event in the capital Berlin on June 27, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.
Merkel was participating in a festival hosted by the Association of Medium-sized Enterprises, during which she visited a Turkish döner producer's stand.
