More than 25,000 illegal immigrants have arrived on British shores since the start of 2024, which with – so far – 46 deaths is proving a particularly deadly year for those attempting the perilous crossing of the English Channel in makeshift boats.

The U.K. government said on Tuesday that 6,000 specialist police officers were ready to deal with far-right rioting.

The unrest broke out last  week on July 30 after three children were killed in a stabbing spree at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, northwest England.

Riots have since flared up in several cities and towns, leading to hundreds of arrests.

UK's Starmer vows 'swift criminal sanctions' for rioters

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday vowed "swift criminal sanctions" following an emergency meeting on the far-right riots that have broken out across England over the murder of three children.

As part of a "number of actions" to come out of the meeting, the government will "ramp up criminal justice" to ensure that "criminal sanctions are swift", Starmer told the media.
