Court mistakenly sentences late Kobane fighter to 19-year jail term

A Turkish citizen, who died in Syria's Kobane last February while fighting against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadists, was sentenced to 19 years in jail for previously being involved in the murder of two people. 

The court, unaware of the death of 20-year-old Serhat Özbekli, who had been released pending trial, sentenced him to 19 years and eight months in prison.

52 civilians dead in coalition strikes in Syria: monitor

US-led air strikes targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) killed at least 52 civilians in a village in northern Syria, a monitoring group said on May 2. 

"Air strikes by the coalition early on Friday on the village of Birmahle in Aleppo province killed 52 civilians," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) launched a major offensive on March 11 to try to capture a strategic town on the Syrian-Turkish border, sparking fierce clashes with Kurdish militia, a monitor said.
      
"Fighters from ISIL started a huge assault towards Ras al-Ain, and were able to take over a village nearby," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
