Prison bill to toughen rules

A new bill to be tabled in Parliament in the coming days by the Citizens' Protection Ministry aims to tighten the regime for the transfer of prisoners to rural detention facilities, according to General Secretary for Anti-Crime Policy Sofia Nikolaou.
Nikolaou told Kathimerini that 200 inmates have escaped during transportation in the past four years.

Three convicts get life terms for killing lawyer

An Athens court handed life terms to three Albanian convicts on Thursday after finding them guilty of the murder of Athens lawyer Michalis Zafeiropoulos in 2017.

Following a prosecutor's proposal for an exemplary punishment, the court sentenced Ibrahim Brahimai, who shot the lawyer, to life, plus an additional 11 years.

Prison raid turns up drugs, weapons

Officers of the Greek Police's anti-narcotics squad carried out a raid on the psychiatric unit of Attica's high-security Korydallos Prison early on Tuesday.

The search, which was carried out with the prison guards, yielded 19 packages containing 9 grams of cocaine and two containing around 5 grams of cannabis, as well as a dagger and six cell phones.

Anti-narcotics officers raid Korydallos psychiatric unit

Officers of the Greek Police's anti-narcotics squad carried out a raid on the psychiatric unit of Attica's high-security Korydallos Prison in the early hours of Tuesday morning. 

The search, which was carried out with the prison guards, yielded an unspecified quantity of drugs along with makeshift knives. 

Lawyer seeks prison release

Athens lawyer Giorgos Antonopoulos, who was remanded in custody in April in connection with a so-called "mafia" said to be operating in the capital's high-security Korydallos Prison, appealed for his release Wednesday, citing an attempt on his life.
