Large wildfire breaks out in central Greece

A large wildfire broke out in a forested area northeast of the city of Larissa, in central Greece, the Fire Service said on Monday.

The blaze is located near the village of Kypselohori. 

Units of the Fire Service are on their way while it has also requested the assistance of aerial means to limit the spread of the fire. 

Major US wildfire grows, forcing new evacuations

With oppressively hot, dry weather looming over much of the Western U.S. and Canada on July 18, the enormous Bootleg Fire in Oregon grew again and authorities ordered new evacuations.

Bootleg, the largest of 80 major fires now active in the U.S., spread overnight from 274,000 acres to 290,000 acres -- three times the size of the metropolis of Detroit, officials said.

Firefighters douse blaze in Rethymno, Crete

Firefighters managed to douse a blaze that broke out in the prefecture of Rethymno on Crete on Sunday afternoon in the area of Lefkogeia but not before it had ravaged dozens of hectares of land. 

The blaze was brought under control in the early hours of Monday morning thanks to the efforts of 75 firefighters and 25 engines.  

Fire burning forest, farmland in Hania

About 30 firefighters assisted by 14 fire engines and two water-dropping helicopters were on Monday trying to contain a fire that broke out in Metohi, in Crete's Hania region.

Strong winds were stoking the blaze, which is mostly burning forest and farmland, making it difficult for firefighting crews to contain the flames.

Police have blocked traffic from reaching the area.

Firefighters battle blaze in Achaia after large fire on Evia

Firefighters on Monday were seeking to douse a blaze that broke out in the early hours near the village of Araxos in western Achaia, in the Peloponnese.  

A team of 16 firefighters, manning eight engines, were involved in the effort to put out the fire, with the help of two water-dropping aircraft. 

Fire Near Kresna Defile Now Under Control (Updated)

The fire has been managed by the team of firefighters and volunteers and is now under control.

Georgi Parmakov, the director of the Blagoevgrad fire brigade, said that as long as the climate conditions remain constant and there aren't any strong winds, the fire will remain contained and eventually extinguished.
