Exhausted Sudanese and foreigners joined growing crowds at Sudan's main seaport Tuesday, waiting to be evacuated from the chaos-stricken nation. After more than two weeks of fighting, areas of the capital of Khartoum appear increasingly abandoned.

The Foreign Ministry announced on May 1 that it has finished evacuating its citizens from Sudan.

Over 1,700 Turkish citizens and around 300 nationals from 22 other countries have been evacuated since April 23, the ministry said, noting that evacuation requests from Turkish citizens staying in Sudan will be evaluated separately.

The situation in Sudan remains dire, with fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group continuing.

Today, UN Deputy Secretary General Martin Griffiths is arriving in the country. According to experts of the organization, despite the failure of another 72-hour truce, the two warring parties show readiness for negotiations.

Sudan's army and its rival paramilitary said Sunday they will extend a humanitarian cease-fire a further 72 hours. The decision follows international pressure to allow the safe passage of civilians and aid, but the shaky truce has not so far stopped the clashes.

Turkish citizens were transported from the Sudanese capital Khartoum to the Ethiopian city of Gondar by a difficult land journey lasting about 24 hours.
