Prominent economist Jože Mencinger dies aged 81
Ljubljana – Economist Jože Mencinger, the economy minister in the first Slovenian government and a key voice of Slovenia’s economic transition in the 1990s, has died aged 81, according to the STA’s unofficial information.

Minister says head of UKC Ljubljana hospital should step down
Ljubljana – The management of the UKC Ljubljana medical centre no longer enjoys the support of the Health Ministry, Minister Danijel Bešič Loredan told the press on Tuesday. He said Jože Golobič, director general of Slovenia’s main hospital, should resign immediately and take responsibility for poor business results and numerous missed deadlines.
Free self-testing kits for students available from Monday
Ljubljana – Free kits for Covid-19 self-testing for primary and secondary school students in the new school year will be available in Slovenian pharmacies from Monday. Testing will be voluntary and will take place at home, with funds for the campaign being secured from the national budget.
Dose of laughter at Ljubljana Castle
Ljubljana – Panč, a festival of stand-up comedy, kicks off at Ljubljana Castle on Sunday bringing performances by 31 comedians from Europe, Asia and Africa.
Slovenian stand-up comedy mainstays such as Martina Ipša, Perica Jerković, Boris Kobal, Lucija Ćirović, Admir Baltić and Tilen Artač are among the line-up.

NIJZ proposes two-tier Covid system for autumn, winter
Ljubljana – The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) presented on Thursday a two-phase approach to dealing with the coronavirus this autumn and winter, with epidemiologist Mario Fafangel underlining the importance of predictability of measures.
Insurer Sava reports lower half-year profit on flat revenue
Ljubljana – The insurance group Sava saw its half-year net profit reduced by a third year-on-year to EUR 28.9 million as operating revenue remained level at EUR 364.2 million. The company said the drop was mainly due the frequency of vehicle insurance claims returning to pre-pandemic levels.
Anna Netrebko will perform at Ljubljana Festival, its boss says
Ljubljana – The concert of Russian soprano Anna Netrebko at the Ljubljana Festival remains scheduled for 26 September, the festival’s director and artistic director Darko Brlek said on Wednesday after the Ukrainian community in Slovenia called for its cancellation with last week’s petition signed by more than 700 people when the appeal was presented.

Staff shortages close down some Petrol service stations
Ljubljana – Slovenia’s largest fuel retailer Petrol has temporarily shut down some of its service stations across the country or shortened their opening hours due to a shortage of staff as a result of an increase in Covid-19 infections.
