The crisis that broke out in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) on April 29 has resulted in the decision to hold an extraordinary party convention, made by the president and the prime minister at their meeting on May 4. 

While traveling to Antalya on May 3 for a "sequencing conference," speculations were abundant that the prime minister might step down at any moment. There was such an expectation for some time because of an alleged widening rift between the president and the prime minister.

Following a meeting with President Tayyip Erdo?an on May 5 that lasted 1 hour 40 minutes, Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu is taking the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) to an emergency congress on May 22, saying he will not put his name forward as a leadership candidate. 

In other words, Davuto?lu has not resigned but he is stepping down. 

A public prosecutor has launched an investigation into prominent business mogul Ali A?ao?lu's comments on one-night stands, saying that A?ao?lu's statements were insulting and discriminatory to women. 

President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has chastised main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu, saying his position was "almost non-existent."

Comments by main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) head Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu about Family Minister Sema Ramazano?lu have drawn a sharp rebuke from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), while President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an described K?l?çdaro?lu as a "political pervert" on April 6.

Turkish Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzio?lu, founding rector of Sabanc? University and former head of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜB?TAK), has died at the age of 74 at an Istanbul hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for some time.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) head Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu stressed the need for liberal democracy in Turkey, at the first meeting of the CHP's new party assembly.

Speaking at the opening of the first meeting after a new assembly was elected at the party's convention on Jan. 17, K?l?çdaro?lu said Turkey needed a liberal democracy and vowed to bring it to the country.

Rifat Hisarc?kl?o?lu, head of the Turkish Union of Chambers and Stock Exchanges (TOBB), who also heads the Business 20 (B-20), a sub branch of the G-20, outlined suggestions for the leaders of the largest economies to boost trade.
