Maribor out of contention for Europa League
Helsinki – Slovenian football champions Maribor have failed to qualify for the Europa League, having lost to HJK Helsinki 1:0 in the return leg of the third round of qualifying on Thursday. The score was 3:0 on aggregate.
While Maribor dominated the field, they failed to create scoring opportunities save for a few shots wide from a distance.

Maribor – A van with Austrian licence plates and driven by a Syrian citizen was transporting 17 illegal migrants when pulled over by Slovenian police on the motorway in Pomurje, north-east, on Tuesday on suspicion of transporting illegal migrants.

Maribor – It seems that Maribor Airport will be deserted again in the summer months as charter flights from Italy’s Bolzano, Pisa and Naples have been cancelled over a lack of interest from Italian tourists also due to growing Covid concerns in Italy, the newspaper Večer reported on Thursday.
Time for cultured night out as Summer Museum Night turns 20
Ljubljana – The 20th Summer Museum Night will take place on Saturday, yet again with an expanded list of museums, galleries and other institutions joining the initiative.
Between 6pm and midnight, 80 institutions in 62 locations across Slovenia will open their doors wide, providing free special guided tours, exhibitions, workshops, concerts and other events.
PM Golob indicates polycentric development of Slovenia
Maribor – Prime Minister Robert Golob visited Maribor, Slovenia’s second largest city, on Monday, underlining that the only right way forward for the country is polycentric development. He believes the eastern half of the country needs a capital that would equal Ljubljana, adding that Maribor has a lot to offer.
Court dismisses case against suspected attacker on judge
Ljubljana – Nearly three years after a brutal attack on a Maribor judge in front of her home, the Slovenj Gradec district court dismissed the case against the chief suspect, the judge’s former partner, due to a lack of evidence, Večer reported on Saturday. The decision is final.
Trial starts in NKMB property transactions case
Maribor – Two and a half years after the first pre-trial hearing in a case in which former NKBM bank CEO Matjaž Kovačič and his aides are being tried for property transactions in Croatia in 2006-2007, the main hearing was held at the Maribor court on Wednesday. All four former senior bank officials denied the charges.
