Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region should hold a non-binding referendum on independence, its president said on Feb. 2, despite the numerous crises it is facing.

Massoud Barzani has previously called for a referendum but set no timetable for a proposed vote.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq leader Masoud Barzani said he discussed the suspended talks between the Turkish government and the Kurdish problem-focused People's Democratic Party (HDP) during his two-day trip to Ankara, expressing his hope for the resumption of the Kurdish peace process. 

Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Massoud Barzani will visit Turkey on Dec. 9 to discuss coordination in the campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as well as the recent rift between Turkey and Iraq over the deployment of Turkish forces on Iraqi soil. 

A coincidence or not, Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlio?lu's first visit abroad immediately after the parliamentary elections was to northern Iraq, where he held meetings with senior Iraqi Kurdish leaders, including Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Masoud Barzani.
