Elizabeth Freeman, also known as “Mum Bett” was born into slavery around 1742 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York.
Her owner, Pieter Hogeboom, gave her to Sheffield, Massachusetts, resident John Ashley when he married Hogeboom’s daughter Annetje. He was known to be one of the most prominent and respected men in western Massachusetts.

Tillerson' message to Serbia prompts speculation
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's message on the occasion of Serbia's Statehood Day makes no mention of the country's EU bid.
This is what AFP noted in its report, adding that "last year on the same day, by contrast, former president Barack Obama’s Secretary of State John Kerry underlined US support for Serbia’s EU entry in the clearest of terms."
