The results of the 2024 US presidential election rattled the country and sent shockwaves across the world - or were cause for celebration, depending on who you ask. Is it any surprise then that the Merriam-Webster word of the year is "polarization"?

In an age of deepfakes and post-truth, as artificial intelligence rose and Elon Musk turned Twitter into X, the Merriam-Webster word of the year for 2023 is "authentic."

"Words that can express so much in a certain period are rare," Merriam-Webster said in a statement.
