Host of events as Ethnographic Museum marks centenary
The Slovenian Ethnographic Museum will be celebrating its centenary this year with a number of events and exhibitions, as well as a new permanent display.
New autonomous zone established in Ljubljana
Ljubljana – A new autonomous zone has been created in Ljubljana near the Žale cemetery in premises owned by the bad bank but left to decay for several years. The users of what has been named the Participative Ljubljana Autonomous Zone (PLAC) expect they will not have to face police but support in “creating a healthy and open society”.

Short Film Festival kicks off in Ljubljana
Ljubljana – The 8th annual Short Film Festival (FeKK) is opening in Ljubljana on Monday to feature more than 160 shorts from 35 countries at various venues in the capital until Saturday, along with accompanying events.

Summer film season starts at Museum Plaza
Ljubljana – A screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator on Monday evening will lift the curtain on a series of events organised at the Museum Plaza on Metelkova Street that will include mini festivals of short film and videos, and debates about the present and future of print media.

Picasso: Writing into Drawing opening being moved to +MSUM
Ljubljana – An exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s illustrations termed Picasso: Writing into Drawing, marking the 140th anniversary of the birth of the great artist, is being moved from the flood-damaged Moderna Galerija to the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (+MSUM). It will open there on 18 November and be on display until 20 February 2022.
Supporters of Slovenia’s Threatened Radio Student March in Ljubljana
Journalists of Radio Student in Slovenia, one of Europe's oldest and strongest non-commercial radio stations, and its supporters, gathered on Friday for a protest walk in the capital Ljubljana following the recent move of the Culture Ministry to cut state money for the station.
CIVICUS warns of Janša’s pressure on civil society, media
Ljubljana – CIVICUS, an international organisation of NGOs, warns in its latest report of the attitude of Prime Minister Janez Janša and the Democrats (SDS) towards the civil society and media. It expresses concern over government attacks on the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) and a ban on protests.
Feminist and queer festival Red Dawns starts online
Ljubljana – The 22nd international feminist and queer festival Red Dawns will open on Friday with an exhibition of posters from Polish women’s strike entitled To jest wojna. All events will be held online.
Protest after riot police enter Metelkova compound
Ljubljana – Several dozen riot police entered the AKC Metelkova alternative culture centre on Monday evening, ostensibly to check whether clubs are closed, a move that prompted protests by the proprietors of Metelkova clubs and the artists and craftsmen who have studios there.

Museums to mark their day in virtual realm
As the pandemic broke out, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) urged its members to find alternative ways of marking the day, so the Slovenian section decided to go virtual.
