Pioneering Turkish Sumerologist dies aged 110
Muazzez İlmiye Çığ, an internationally acclaimed Turkish scholar on ancient Sumeria, died on Nov. 17 at the age of 110.
Çiğ, born in 1914, passed away in intensive care at a hospital in the southern province of Mersin's Mezitli district.

Sumerologist turns 109
Veteran Turkish Sumerologist Muazzez İlmiye Çığ, who lives in the southern province of Mersin, has turned 109 years old. Mersin's Mezitli district Mayor Neşet Tarhan made a surprise visit to Çığ and at her home with his wife Sembol Tarhan.

Low tide reveals ruins of ancient port in southern Turkey
The remains of an ancient port in Turkey's southern province of Mersin's Mezitli district have come to light due to the receding water levels resulting from a low tide.
Some portions of the port, which is part of the ancient city of Soli Pompeipolis, could be seen as the water levels decreased.
Archaeologists reach inner walls in site of ancient Greek poet’s tomb in Turkey’s south
Excavation teams have reached the inner walls of a memorial tomb of the ancient Greek didactic poet Aratus in the Mediterranean province of Mersin's Mezitli district.
The archaeologists, led by academic Remzi Yağcı from Dokuz Eylül University, have been carrying out excavations to unearth the memorial tomb of the Hellenic-era astronomer and poet in what was then called Soli.
Tomb of Aratos found in southern Turkey
A memorial tomb of mathematician and scientist Aratos, who was the founder of astrology science and lived between 315-245, has been found in the southern province of Mersin's Mezitli district. The tomb is believed to lie within the excavation area of Soli Pompeiopolis ancient city, which dates back 3,500 years.

Stork with GPS shot in Turkey
A white stork, which was freed in Slovakia after a GPS tracker was attached to it, has died in the southern province of Mersin.
Turkish officials said the animal was shot with a gun by hunters.
