Migrant farm workers see camp go up in smoke

Dozens of migrant farm workers in Nea Manolada in the northwestern Peloponnese saw their scant belongings go up in smoke on Thursday morning after a fire burned through a camp of makeshift shelters.

There were no injuries reported during the incident, though the workers, who are mostly Bangladeshi migrants, lamented the loss of hard-earned cash and important papers like passports.

About 30% of Children in Refugee Centers go to School

Only about 30% of children in refugee centers in Bulgaria are enrolled in school. The main barriers to their inclusion in the education system are the language barrier and the unwillingness of children and parents to stay for a long time in Bulgaria.

This was made clear during a conference on the training of migrant children, organized by the Syndicate of Bulgarian Teachers.

Fall in Migration After Brexit Could Push Up Inflation

A sharp fall in migrant workers coming to Britain as a consequence of Brexit could push up wages and cause a spike in inflation in the short term, according to the governor of the Bank of England, quoted by the Guardian. 

Mark Carney was setting out his view on inflation days after the Bank's rate-setting panel indicated it could raise interest rates for the first time in a decade.

Greece seeks review of European court order for damages to Manolada victims

The Greek government has requested a review of a sentence issued by the Council of Europe's Court of Human Rights in March which calls on the state to pay some 600,000 euros in damages for failing to protect dozens of migrant strawberry pickers who were shot at by their foreman in Manolada in the Peloponnese in 2013.
