Greek long jump athlete Miltiadis Tentoglou has been named as one of the 10 nominees for this year's European Athlete of the Year.

Organized by European Athletics, the title will be awarded to the athlete who comes out on top of a selection process in which the public has their say.

Greek long jump champion Miltos Tentoglou has warned he will retire if the World Athletics Federation replaces the wooden board from the jump with a "take-off zone," making things easier for all athletes.

Instead, Tentoglou expressed his desire to be the Greek flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Miltiadis Tentoglou flexed his biceps, draped the Greek flag over his shoulders and stared up into the clear night sky above the packed Stade de France.

It was a moment to savor: Tentoglou became only the second man after Carl Lewis to win two consecutive Olympic long jump titles, adding the gold at the 2024 Games on Tuesday night to the one he claimed at Tokyo three years ago.

Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou won the gold medal in the men's long jump final at the 2024 Summer Olympics, in Saint-Denis, with a jump of 8.48 meters on Tuesday.

Jamaican Wayne Pinnock took silver, and Italy's Mattia Furlani claimed bronze.

Speaking to the ERT public broadcaster after the event, Tentoglou said, "I am very happy, but I feel I could have achieved even more."

Many members of the Greek track and field delegation had left earlier for France to complete the final stage of their preparation for the Olympic Games.

This was the reason they missed the opening ceremony, but today at noon, they also made their appearance at the Olympic Village.
