Having created the most successful animated franchise of all time with "Despicable Me" and its spin-off "Minions" films, producer Chris Meledandri knows a thing or two about blockbuster movies.

New Sony horror film "The Invitation" topped the North American box office this weekend despite extremely weak ticket sales of just $7 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported on Aug. 28.

Some young U.K. fans wearing suits to showings of the new Minions movie as part of a social media trend have been turned away after similarly attired groups engaged in rowdy behavior.

"Minions: The Rise of Gru," the latest installment in the animated "Despicable Me" franchise, crushed the competition at the North American box office in its opening weekend, with an expected $127.9 million take over the four-day July 4th holiday.

This weekend, Despicable Me 3 will premiere in more U.S. theaters than any other movie in history. As Variety reports, 4,529 theaters will show the film. The movie is the fourth release in the franchise that first introduced the freaky little yellow monsters known as Minions to the world in 2010.

Marvel action flick ?Ant-Man? kept its perch atop the US box office over the weekend, edging out retro videogame comedy ?Pixels? in North American ticket sales, industry data showed on July 27.

Starring Paul Rudd as superhero Scott Lang, ?Ant-Man? pulled in more than $24.9 million, less than half what it took in its opening last week.
