Rapid response to measles outbreak is critical, as cases this year predicted to soon exceed total number reported in 2023

Measles cases across Europe continue to surge, with the number of measles cases recorded for this year soon to exceed the total number of cases reported throughout 2023, warned WHO and UNICEF today.

The National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases in Bulgaria has confirmed the country's first case of measles, sparking concerns about potential outbreaks. The case, originating in Sofia, was identified at the end of last week by the national reference laboratory for measles, mumps, and rubella.

Against the backdrop of the outbreak of measles in Europe, the Hellenic National Public Health Organization has urged members of the public to check that they are vaccinated against the illness.

Serbian epidemiologists warn that, due to the decreasing number of vaccinated children, it is a matter of days when we will have another epidemic in Serbia.
According to the WHO, more than 42,000 infected people were registered in Europe in 2023, while there were 941 a year earlier, which is why they requested urgent measures to prevent further spread.

Amid concerns over measles outbreaks in neighboring countries, Bulgaria's Chief State Health Inspector, Angel Kunchev, highlighted the risk of measles spreading due to incomplete vaccination coverage.

The Council of State, Greece's supreme administrative court, today made public a ruling regarding the state's liability for side effects that are linked to vaccination.

Djerlek told RTS that among the noticed consequences of the vaccine were redness of the place where the vaccine was applied, pain at the puncture place and a temperature of 37.2, which passed within a few hours.
"I would like us to continue like this," Djerlek said.

Education Minister Aeber Ademi said on Tuesday that at least 200 children are not being allowed to attend school because they are not vaccinated, but added that these are only the preliminary numbers that the ministry gathered from education inspectorates across the country, and that the real figure might be higher.
