Finance Minister demands further drop in bank charges
National Economy and Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis has called on banks to slash their charges once again.
From the stage of the Athens Innovation Forum 2024 on Thursday, he asked them to further expand electronic transactions, realizing, as he said, that "they operate in the context of a society with specific capabilities and that excesses harm them too."
Mobile and internet banking account for most transactions
Last year was an all-time benchmark for alternative digital networks in the domestic banking system, with almost all monetary transactions taking place outside bank branches, a development that seemed extremely elusive at the beginning of the last decade.
Over 90% of payments are made online
Over 90% of bank payments were made via internet and mobile banking in 2022, highlighting the dominance of electronic networks in daily transactions, which have almost completely replaced cash transactions at the counter, but also a significant part of transactions at ATMs.

Banks are offering transaction packages in the form of monthly subscriptions that can lead to savings ranging from 7 to 44 euros a month.

Branch fee for tax payment from Friday
As of this Friday taxpayers will have to fork out between 1.10 and 1.50 euros for every transaction conducted at their bank's counter to pay their dues to the state.
