An unusually warm spring has accelerated the onset of mosquito season in many parts of Greece, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Tuesday, urging citizens to protect themselves against the pest.

The Istanbul Municipality has launched a mobile application that will enable authorities to identify and locate different mosquito species in the city in a bid to check the mosquito-borne diseases in the province.

It was a typically anodyne statement by the World Health Organisation: "Given the magnitude of the Zika crisis, WHO encourages affected countries and their partners to boost the use of both old and new approaches to mosquito control." Anodyne, that is, until you realize what they mean by "new approaches."
