Motorcycle registrations soar by 25 pct in metropolises

Motorcycle ownership is surging across Türkiye's metropolitan areas as rising car costs and traffic congestion drive residents toward two-wheeled alternatives.

Over the past 10 months, motorcycle numbers in major cities rose by 25 percent, compared to a modest 6 percent growth in car registrations, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).

Traffic units employ AI-powered speed radar system

Traffic units across the country have recently begun using an AI-driven speed radar system produced under the coordination of the Turkish defense industry.

This new system allows for simultaneous ticketing for automobiles, trucks, pickup trucks, motorcyclists or other vehicles traveling on a four-lane road.

A motorbike driven by a 28-year-old man, still unknown under what circumstances, veered off course and crashed into shop windows, causing damage to two of them, as well as a car that was parked.

Two killed in Anavyssos crash

Two people were killed in a crash Friday night in Anavyssos, East Attica.

The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Athens-Sounion Avenue when a car driven by a 31-year-old woman collided with a motorcycle. The 28-year-old motorcyclist and his 30-year-old passenger died at the scene. 

38 pct of accidents linked to motorcycles in 2023: Minister

Türkiye witnessed an increase in motorcycle-related accidents, with 38 percent of fatal and injury accidents in 2023 caused by motorcycles, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya has said.

Yerlikaya attended the opening of the 2024 Motobike Istanbul Fair on March 21, where he highlighted the increasing number of motorcycle accidents in the country.

Probe into officer wheelie

The police has launched a preliminary administrative inquiry in the wake of the uproar caused by a video that is making the rounds on the internet in which an officer of the DIAS motorcycle unit is seen doing a wheelie on a main road in the port city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
