Aegean island residents against closed centers

Mayors of islands where the government plans to create new closed centers for migrants via expropriations have expressed their vehement opposition and have declined, in protest, to attend a scheduled meeting Thursday with Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis. Moreover, a protest rally will be held Thursday by residents of Lesvos island outside the Interior Ministry in Athens.

Six Senior Public Officials Investigated over Conflict of Interest

By decisions adopted at a meeting today, the Commission for Combating Corruption and Forfeiture of Illegally Acquired Property has initiated proceedings for establishing a conflict of interest with respect to six senior public officials under Art. 6 para. 1 of the anti-corruption law, said the Commission's press office quoted by Focus News Agency. Local Elections in Bulgaria Today

Today, October 27, between 7 am and 8 pm, the first round of the regular mayoral elections are held in Bulgaria in a total of 265 municipalities. 66 political parties, coalitions and independent candidates were registered at the Central Election Commission to take part at the local elections.

The Election Campaign is Closing Today

The election campaign for mayors and municipal councilors closes today at 24.00.

Saturday is a day for reflection, and on October 27, over 6 million and 200,000 voters will be able to exercise their right to vote.

The total number of candidates for mayors and municipal councilors is close to 36,300. Elections will be held in 265 municipalities in Bulgaria.

Electoral lessons

The main opposition insists we should give the simple majority electoral system a chance at local government level and then, if needed, change it. In other words, why not let municipalities fall apart before fixing them? The problems with the electoral law are already evident in the new municipal councils.

Bulgarian Government Assigned Deputy PM Donchev to Plan and Coordinate Local Elections

Bulgaria's government on August 8 approved a decision on the planning and conduct of the upcoming elections for municipal councilors and mayors on October 27. Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev was assigned to be in charge of the preparation and organization of the local government elections, reports BNT.
