The Municipality of Athens announced on Thursday that it will take measures against mess made by contractors in sidewalk and road works.

According to the municipality, joint teams from the municipal police and the regular police will now carry out inspections to identify potential violations.

A much greater number of violations related to the placement of table seating in public spaces were recorded in the first quarter of this year in the Greek capital, City of Athens data have shown.

From January to April, Municipal police found 1,246 cases violations of the regulations on table seating, an increase of 54% on the same period in 2023.

Municipal and state police officers have been thrown into the effort to convince hundreds of contrary residents in the northern port city of Thessaloniki to abide by health regulations calling for self-isolation amid the coronavirus epidemic.

In an effort to encourage citizens to avoid public transport as part of the push to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the City of Athens will allow free parking in slots marked P-69 for 14 days as of Wednesday.

The municipal police force will get back to Athens’s streets as of next week, according to an announcement of Municipality of Athens, two years after it was disbanded.

The city force will be informing residents and visitors of their role and responsibilities by distributing informative leaflets as part of an information campaign which will last until October 25.

A municipal police officer who shot a district mayor in the northwestern province of Bursa was arrested late May 24, state-run Anadolu Agency reported. 

The police officer, identified as F.B., shot Cüneyt Y?ld?z, the mayor of the Gürsu district of Bursa, along with his security guard, Yener ?im?ek, on May 20.
