Turkish man acquitted of murder after more than six years in jail

A man sentenced to 21.5 years for murder in the Aegean province of İzmir walked free after serving six years and seven months in prison as a court overturned his conviction. The man was given 104,000 Turkish Liras (approximately $30,000) in compensation, which is low, considering he spent his youth in prison.

The Number of Prisoners Released Early this Year will be a Record

The early released this year will reach a record number. From the beginning of the year to July 21, prisoners released before serving their entire sentence were 632, according to Directorate-General for Execution of Penalties. If the pace persists, by the end of the year there will be another 451 people. This will lead to a record 1083.

Istanbul nightclub ISIL attacker's phone number registered in suspect's phone

Authorities have determined that the phone number of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attacker who killed 39 people in an Istanbul nightclub on Jan. 1 was registered in the cellphone of another ISIL suspect, who appeared for in a trial the first time in the Mediterranean province of Antalya on July 10. 

"Court releases Curuvija case accused threatening witnesses"

Milan Radonjic and Ratko Romic, accused for the killing of journalist Slavko Curuvija, have been released to house arrest.

Reacting to this, Veran Matic, chairman of the Commission Investigating Murders of Journalists, said he was "surprised with the strange decision, especially as the fourth accused in the case, Miroslav Kurak, is still on the run."
