National Assembly

Ljubljana – Deputies of the Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi), who are to be in the opposition in the new term, said that Robert Golob could not count on their support as the National Assembly is taking a vote on the prime minister nominee on Wednesday. They nevertheless said constructive cooperation with the new government was a possibility.

Ljubljana – The National Assembly was expected to take note of the resignation of Agriculture Minister Jože Podgoršek on Tuesday but did not even convene a session. The college of deputy group leaders, which has the formal power to call a session, was inquorate because coalition faction leaders did not show up.

Ljubljana/Koper – Robert Golob, the head of the Freedom Movement party that has convincingly won Sunday’s general election, is expected to meet President Borut Pahor informally on Tuesday as the most likely candidate for the prime minister-designate. Talks with the Social Democrats (SD) and Left on forming a new coalition are also expected tomorrow.

Ljubljana – The incumbent MPs for the Italian and Hungarian minorities, Felice Žiža and Ferenc Horváth, secured re-election on Sunday, both getting approximately 60% of the vote in their respective constituencies.

Ljubljana – Parliamentary Speaker Igor Zorčič told the STA as he cast a ballot in Velike Malence near Brežice today that citizens always made the right decision in election. Prime Minister and Democrats (SDS) head Janez Janša, who voted in Šentilj near Velenje, expressed a similar view. Several other party heads were optimistic as well.

Ljubljana – The coalition New Slovenia (NSi) is looking at an improved result in Sunday’s general election compared to the 2018 vote, which party president Matej Tonin likened to “winning a medal”. He noted that the NSi would likely be in the opposition in the next term, where it would be constructive as Slovenia is facing many challenges.

Ljubljana – With exit polls for Sunday’s general election showing the ruling Democrats (SDS) receiving 22.5% of the vote to trail the newly-formed Freedom Movement, the first reactions from the SDS mainly refer to what it perceives as an unfair game in terms of media coverage of the campaign. The party will wait for official results to comment further.

Ljubljana – Slovenian voters will head to the polls on Sunday in an election that analysts say will determine whether Slovenia continues on the conservative path paved by the Janez Janša government over the last two years, or takes a more leftist turn under newcomer Robert Golob and parties that are currently in opposition. Polls show everything is still open.

Ljubljana – The final Mediana poll ahead of Sunday’s general election gave the Freedom Movement a 21.1% support rating, which puts it 0.6 percentage points ahead of the ruling Democrats (SDS). Things have meanwhile gotten even more crowded in the important race under way around the 4% parliamentary threshold, shows the poll, published on Friday.

Ljubljana – The final pre-election poll by pollster Parisfal brought only minor changes compared to a week ago, still putting the Democrats (SDS) ahead of the Freedom Movement and the SocDems. New Slovenia (NSi), the Left and Connecting Slovenia are projected to make it to parliament too, while the LMŠ, SAB, Resni.ca, Our Land, SNS and DeSUS are not.
